Holiday Eating: Don't Let Yourself Go
description:
It's a vicious cycle really...the holidays come, we pig out on wonderful goodies, and then resolve to start the new year 'strong' with lots of exercise and healthy eating. At least I do. And at almost 29 years old, I'm still fat! Obviously, I have a hard time taking my own advice when I say that we need to be careful with what we put in our mouth during the holidays!
My recent weight loss regimen started in November, perhaps a horrible time to begin (or attempt to) lose weight. Though I have not, and unfortunately will not reach my goal of 15 pounds, I was able to drop a few. It's a start. We all have to start somewhere.
Now, as we enter the new year, I've reflected upon my habits, and found that while trying to exercise some restraint, I kept four general perspectives in mind:
1) Eat everything in moderation: We visit with friends and family over the course of several weeks. There's definitely going to be food. In my case, my father makes delicious tamales...many of them! I also have in-laws that make gourmet chocolates. With that, I've realized that I've got a potential weight problem staring me in the face any time I take a look at one of those. Moderation is key when you know food and goodies will be plentiful.
2) Don't rationalize your choices: I always learn my lessons the hard way. I think that if I have a hearty helping of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc. etc., that I'll be good the next day by having a salad. Why not have a smaller serving of turkey and the other goodies with a salad? You never know what the next meal will bring...see number 1!
3) Create a food/exercise quid pro quo: If you MUST indulge, commit yourself to to some sort of health exchange. If I'm going to have a piece of my mother-in-law's pumpkin roll or poppy seed bread, then I should probably take a walk, do some stairs or an exercise video as well. In a round about way, both are worth it.
4) Incorporate your family into healthy eating and exercise: Don't fall into the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" scenario! Make them join YOU! Think about it, what's better than you as a healthy individual? I dare say having a healthy family. Be resolute and set an example.
I know these four tips aren't mutually exclusive, but they've helped me watch my waistline over these past few weeks, and I'll feel even better getting the new year started off on the right foot!
Here's to a great, healthy 2010!
